Lack of physical activity, fast food which are filled with calories but have no nutritional value, stress, all these ingredients cumulate and create the present health crisis the world is facing.<span id="more-1302"></span></p>
<p>One of the main health problems nowadays is obesity or being overweight. With more than 70 percent overweight adults in America alone is an indication of how much this problem has proliferated. No doubt there are numerous theories on losing weight and internet is filled with articles on losing weight. Some provide quick fixes for losing weight while some include fitness regime.</p>

<p>Though many people feel that they manage to lose some weight initially, they go back to their normal self after a few weeks. It is hence quite important to know the proper way to lose weight and be wary of mistakes not to make while trying to lose weight. Some of the common mistakes people make while losing weight are-</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Using The Wrong Strategy</strong> &#8211; Just controlling your diet or exercising won’t be efficient enough. You must find a plan where you use both controlled diet and exercise for losing weight. Also make sure that you are not under stress as it can wash away all your hard work.</li>
<li><strong>Expecting To Lose Too Much Weight</strong> &#8211; It is neither feasible nor advised to lose too much weight too soon. No doubt some people have lost 20 pounds in a week; it however requires lots of work as well as is considered dangerous for health. Instead aim for little change in due course of time. Losing up to 2 pounds in a week is advised and is quite achievable and healthy.</li>
<li><strong>Not Having A Strategy </strong>- Create a strategy for losing weight and stick to it; if you are finding good results with one of the strategies, try to use it more often and if some of them do not work you can always lose one or two of them. Also having a strategy will make sure that you are sticking to the line or at least you know whenever you are deviating from it. Now if you don’t have any strategy then you don’t have a line to stick to and hence more chances of going astray.</li>
<li><strong>Not Having A Measuring Tape</strong> &#8211; Keeping a measuring tape and taking measurements in regular intervals can provide you with valuable data on your progress which is quite essential for knowing your progress and planning your strategies. On the other hand not having one will devoid you of the essential data about your progress. Also getting yourself weighed in regular intervals is a good idea.</li>
<li><strong>Using Quick Fixes</strong> &#8211; Many people go for crash diets or Syrup diets, which is based on depriving the body of calories in order to lose weight. Although there are numerous examples of drastic weight loss through these quick fix techniques, they however can cause serious side-effects. Also crash diets although may show effects in short time is short lived and you will gain weight as fast as you lost it.</li>
<li><strong>Not Keeping A Food Diary</strong> &#8211; Gaining weight is simply intake of more calories than you spend. Hence by keeping a tab of calories you consume, you can make a create a strategy to lose weight quite efficiently.</li>
<li><strong>Being Too Strict</strong> &#8211; Being too strict with your plan is also not good for you. You may devoid yourself of having the chocolate cake for the 3 month course you are following, but once the course is done, you will be tempted to gorge on your favorite meal the moment you get a chance. Also being too strict with your body may arise various complications which is better to avoid in any case. Hence you can have that occasional high- calorie food once in a while, just make sure to add some extra work out session to neutralize it the next day.</li>

<p>It has always been believed that eating a toasted slice of whole wheat is a healthier option when compared to Snickers bar or a soft drink. However, the hard fact is that the wheat bread increases the blood sugar more than the soda and candy bars.</p>
<p>The reason being, the glycemic index also known as GI is higher, and it provokes the food to raise the blood sugar. If your blood sugar goes high after eating, a large amount of insulin is released. As a result, excess fat gets accumulated in the body. There are eight reasons listed below that proves that wheat is not apt for weight loss.</p>
<p><strong>1. Wheat eaters tend to eat more: </strong>Have you ever analyzed that you tend to feel hungrier and go on hunting for snacks even after eating heavy grain breakfast at 7 in the morning? The surge in insulin and glucose and subsequent drops in blood sugar that is followed by consuming wheat makes you feel hungry in every 2 hours irrespective of whether your body needs the food or not. The hunger will be present all throughout the day in the form of light night munching, afternoon slumps, and cravings before lunch. You may feel like eating constantly due to consumption of carbs based out of wheat.</p>
<p><strong>2. Brain becomes addictive due to over consumption of wheat: </strong>The main cause that make wheat inappropriate for weight loss is that it has addictive properties present in it. Wheat contributes towards stimulating your appetite that makes you eat more and more of wheat foods. And, when you stop consuming those foods, your body will have symptoms of withdrawal. As per researches at the National Institute of Health, the properties present in gluten have the abilities to penetrate through the brain and blood barriers. Switch to lean meat instead of wheat foods:</strong> By eating lean meat as well as raw vegetables instead of wheat based and processed foods, you can enjoy better sleep, your mood will be more stable, and you feel more energetic than before. Wheat has no significance, when it comes to gaining energy in body. <p><strong>5. Wheat has high calories:</strong> The biggest reason for gaining more weight due to consumption of wheat is because of the fact that they are not low in calories. Most people are not aware of this fact and they try to consume more of whole wheat that comes in the way of weight loss. Whole wheat products can also be high in added sugar, when compared to products that are made out of refined white flour. <p><strong>6. Storage of visceral fat:</strong> Wheat contains a kind of sugar known as amylopectin that is solely responsible for accumulating visceral fat in the body that appears as deep fat surrounding organs. Also, bio engineered protein is present in the wheat called as gliadin protein. It makes one crave for more food. As a result, people gain more weight. As per many doctors, skipping wheat for a period of one month can definitely show significant results as far as your waistline is concerned.</p>

Water retention and bloating are the common causes of consuming wheat:</strong> The major benefit of cutting down wheat from your diet is that it will have greater effects as far as weight loss is concerned. <p>There are two types of calories, the small calorie and the large calorie. Small calories are a measure of how much energy it takes to increase the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius. A large calorie, also known as kilocalorie or food calorie, measures how much energy it takes to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius. Many foreign foods are labeled with kcal instead of just “calories”, as the U.S. does. Kcal and Calories are the same thing.</p>
<p>If you have ever been concerned about your health, you have probably already learned that by looking at the calorie content of any food, you can tell if it is a good choice for you to eat or not. Let&#8217;s discuss a little more about the importance of calories and how you can use calorie content on labels to your advantage.</p>
<p>How do they measure calories?</p>
<p>Most foods are made up of a variety of components. There are 7 main ones that actually produce caloric heat, or in other words, have calories. The four that we will be most concerned with as far as diet goes are fat, proteins, carbohydrates, and fiber. Just one gram of fat contains 9 calories. Both proteins and carbohydrates contain 4 calories per gram. And finally, fiber contains a mere 2 calories per gram. Thus, in order to find the total amount of calories in a food you must determine how many grams of each calorie-holding ingredient is in the item.</p>
<p>Another possible way to determine calories in a food item is to burn it. Perhaps you did an experiment in your high school science class that taught you how this was done. Under controlled circumstances, you would measure how much heat was given off when a certain food item was burned. Then, using chemistry calculations, you would be able to determine the total number of calories in the food. This generic method doesn&#8217;t tell you how many of those calories come from the seven components mentioned above, but it can certainly be a fun experiment anyway.</p>
<p>How many calories should I have each day?</p>
<p>The number of calories you should eat each day is completely dependent upon your body. Men need more calories a day than women because their bodies contain more muscle mass. Athletes burn large amounts of calories and thus need to eat more in order to compensate. Overweight people actually need more calories to maintain their weight than those with a normal weight because it takes their body more work to perform its regular daily functions. Pregnant women need more calories than regular women. Older folks should eat few calories than adults and teenagers. We could go on and on about the differences in calorie intake for each person.</p>
<p>Basically, your body burns a certain amount of calories every day as you go about your regular activities, and even more if you add exercise to the mix. To maintain your weight, you must eat only as many calories as you burn. If you want to lose weight, you need to eat fewer calories than your body burns. The opposite if you want to gain weight. It all comes down to simple science and really knowing how your body responds under given conditions.</p>
<p>Luckily, there are plenty of online calculators that can help you figure out a general idea of how many calories you should eat a day in order to maintain weight, lose it, or even gain it. Having good health can be critical to preserve a balanced and happy life. If you have never tried it before, you should give label reading a try on your next shopping trip. It may surprise you how many calories are in some of the foods you find most enjoyable! Now that you understand what a calorie actually does and how it can affect your life, you will be able to take control of your own health and make wise health choices.</p>

<div class='embaArticle' style='display:inline'><p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-1057" title="virtual-fitness" src="http://chickandfit.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/virtual-fitness.jpg" alt="" width="270" height="245" />If you’ve been trying to find a way to lose weight that actually works, and are sick of the influx of diet pill scams and articles telling you to stop eating and exercise more (wow, I didn’t know that!), it may be an indication that the conventional approach isn’t working for you (not that there’s anything wrong with this, considering that doing monotonous cardio is not something that everyone has time for).<span id="more-1054"></span></p>
<p>Luckily, thanks to recent studies that have been published over the last year, new ways have been discovered to help you lose weight that are not only effective, but more innovative and less time consuming than the conventional “eat less and exercise more” method.  Here are 3 unconventional ways to lower your body fat:</p>
<p><strong>1. Virtual Fitness</strong></p>
<p>If you’ve ever been told that sitting around on the computer is not good for you, those people are wrong.  Well, sort of.  A recent study carried out at Indiana University followed two groups of women considered obese over a period of 12 weeks.</p>
<p>The first group attended 4 hour long weekly sessions at a fitness club (learning about what types of food they should eat, how to exercise, etc.) and the second did the same via an online fitness club on the computer game “Second Life.”  While both groups lost about 10 lbs, the online group scored higher on tests that assessed whether they retained ideologies and values that lead to healthier lifestyles.</p>
<p><strong>2. Have Confidence</strong></p>
<p>This may seem like the type of “advice” that can be relegated to the things that your mother tells you, but a recent study published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity showed that improving one’s body image can actually enhance the effectiveness of weight loss programs.</p>
<p>Researchers enrolled obese women (with a BMI of over 30) into a year long weight loss program, with one group given general health information on how to lose weight and the other attending weekly group sessions where issues like improving body image were discussed.  Surprisingly, the group that learned how to have an improved body image lost 7% of their starting weight, while the other group lost only 2%, suggesting that that having more self confidence reduces anxiety and overly rigid diet regimens, which both often leads to overeating.</p>
<p><strong>3. Use Sensa</strong></p>
<p>No, I don’t mean use a sensei, but karate does burn a lot of calories.  Sensa, invented by a neurologist and perfected  after 25 years of research carried out at the Smell and Taste Treatment Research Center, is a tasteless spray that will mitigate your appetite.</p>
<p>In clinical trials that lasted 6 months, the average amount of weight lost was 30 pounds.  If you’re one of those people whose stomach will absolutely not stand for skipping meals or eating less, Sensa has proven to be an innovative approach to mitigating your caloric intake without starving yourself.</p>

First throw away any weight loss pills you have, don’t waste your time or money with them. If you want to lose weight and keep it off you have to change your relationship with food permanently. Weight loss pills are gimmicks, looking for a sucker with money to spend.</p>
<p>I should know they took a lot of my money. The vast majority of weight loss pills don’t work, or will stop working when you stop taking them. And who wants to be skinny for a little while? No one that’s who!<span id="more-936"></span></p>
<p>There is something you should know about those pills, only a few are actually tested for human safety. Why, you ask well they are not tested because they are not required to by law. And why spend money on tests when you don’t have to. These companies don’t care about you; they care about your money. Give yourself a break they fool thousands of people every day. The important thing is that you are reading this article and now know the truth. The kicker is that you already know what you have to do. Change your lifestyle.</p>
<p><strong>There is no healthy shortcut to being fit</strong>. Sure you could get skinny fast with fad diets and weight loss pills but what’s the point if it won’t last. If you want to be skinny and strong for a long time you have to make long term changes. For optimum health make small changes over time, don’t shock your body and mind by doing a 180. Ease yourself into it; go day by day to start. Before you even make a change write down everything you eat, how much you eat, and when you eat it, you may also want to keep a little journal of how you were feeling that day.</p>
<p>You might be surprised when you look back over a week and see how much you eat and how your food intake was affected by your feelings. This is true for men and women. It is much easier to make a goal when you know exactly where you are starting from. Good places to start for most people is increasing the intake of raw fruits and vegetables and decreasing the intake of animal products. The internet is full of false advice so don’t take my word for it, go to mypyrimid.gov and assess you daily intake. This is a government site and a good resource.</p>
<p>Now for the part you have to really learn to love. It sucks at first it really does, and by at first I mean for a long time. Like I said earlier a lifestyle change is a must, which means that while you are losing weight vigorous exercise will be an almost daily activity (I suggest 6 days a week). Once you reach your ideal weight you need to maintain the weight. Stick to the changes you’ve made to your diet and exercise for at least 30 minutes a day at least four days a week (yes that’s more than half the week). That’s why it is important to learn to love exercise! A good tip is to smile while you exercise, its weird but it will make you feel a little better mentally.</p>
<p>You should be hurting physically, but in a good way. Before jumping into an extreme workout prepare your body with two weeks of stretching and walking. This is a slow process and will help you avoid injury. Don’t waste money with useless equipment and more gimmicks. If you are a beginner simply buy a yoga DVD or search the internet for poses. Go through the motions for awhile without weights. Get a Jillian Michaels DVD and take it slow. Jillian has lots of good advices and most of her videos include a warm-up and cool-down session. Both are very important.</p>
<p>Only you can change your body. So drop the fad diet and pills start eating right and get moving!</p>

Every year there are new plans, guides and sometimes even diet revolutions. But what really makes a good diet plan? Why do some systems remain popular for years while others fade away? The short answer is science. Some diet plans are based on a limited number of personal experiences which for one reason or another do not help everyone who tries them. The diets which really work are those that are based on human biology and nutrition and so far the best system is the glycemic index.<span id="more-904"></span></p>
<p>Dr. Atkins, most famous for his Atkins New Diet Revolution, described the Glycemic Index as a &#8220;Wonderful Tool&#8221;. The Atkins Diet is typical of diets which have lost popularity. This is really unfortunate as the main problem with the &#8220;Atkins diet&#8221; was not the diet plan itself but how many people failed to understand it and implemented it incorrectly. Today many nutritionists use the Glycemic Index to help the overweight and especially diabetes patients to manage their weight.</p>
<p>Losing weight is really a very simple process. By that I mean that the biological process which leads to the breakdown of fat (and also muscle tissue if done incorrectly) is well understood and physically very easy to implement. The problem that we have is overcoming our desire to eat, our appetite. This is where the glycemic index really helps. To understand how it works you need to know a little bit about human biology.</p>
<p>The glycemic index (GI) is a scale from zero to one hundred which measures the speed at which sugars locked up in carbohydrates are digested and converted to blood sugar (glucose). High GI foods, such as raw sugar, sports drinks and soda, white bread and white rice, are all digested very quickly and raise blood sugar levels to high levels. Why is this bad though?</p>
<p>Blood sugar levels control fat accumulation and fat burning. The human body is very sensitive to the amount of glucose in the blood so to control levels two hormones are released. Insulin, which most people have heard of, regulates the uptake of glucose into muscle and fat tissue for storage. The reason why people with diabetes lose weight is because their insulin levels are not sufficient to store new fat. Also they do not have energy to exercise due to a shortage of glycogen (glucose stored in muscle tissue) which fuels muscle contraction.</p>
<p>The other hormone is glucagon. Glucagon raises blood sugar levels when they fall too low. It does this by prompting the breakdown of both fat and muscle tissue to extract the sugar. It does this because the brain is fueled by sugar and when blood sugar levels fall the brain cannot function properly.</p>
<p>So, eating a diet which consists mostly of low GI carbohydrates and lean proteins (as well as healthy fats from fish, nuts and dairy) helps you to manage your blood glucose levels and avoid spikes in insulin. This reduces the chances of fat accumulation and increases the likelihood of fat break down after exercise when blood sugar runs low.</p>
<p>Such a diet also helps you to manage your hunger which means that you eat less. As low GI carbohydrates are digested slowly your receive a more constant supply of energy. This is why a bowl of oats for breakfast can ward off hunger until lunch time whereas if you eat a bagel for breakfast you will probably be feeling hungry by mid-morning.</p>
<p>Another important aspect of the diet is to ensure that the low GI carbohydrates are well-balanced with lean proteins. Protein is vital to prevent muscle wastage which can occur on reduced calorie diets, and you do still have to reduce calories to lose weight on a low GI diet. Protein also serves another function. When you digest protein the body releases another hormone called PYY which regulates hunger. The same hormone is released during exercise.</p>
<p>This is why regular exercise and plenty of protein can also help with weight loss &#8211; you simply feel less hungry and so eat less, and the exercise raises metabolism too. A win-win situation.</p>
