Relationship Between Sex and Well-Being


One of the ever increasing questions that people are asking is how sex affects the general health of an individual. Most people engage in sex just for the physical pleasure and the emotional bonding aspect.

However there are other health benefits that can be derived from engaging in sex. Physically and psychologically, sex is beneficial to all and here are some of the reasons why people should engage in sex other than for the pleasure or expression of emotional ties.

Sex helps one to sleep better by reducing stress levels.

The term sexual frustration is usually not too far from the truth. People who engage in sex more are able to handle stress better. They feel more at ease and are generally happier. The release associated with an orgasm leaves one in a deep sense of relaxation and calm. Many people will fall into a deep slumber after engaging in sex. Regular trysts in bed leave one completely relaxed and feeling more refreshed when he/she wakes up the following day.

Sex is the fountain of youth.

The hormone Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is increased whenever you achieve a sexual orgasm. Having a minimum of two orgasms a week can increase your lifespan. DHEA is known to increase the immune system, repair tissue and work as an anti-depressant.

Sex increases immunity.

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is an antibody which is increased whenever one engages in sex. This antibody protects the body from colds and other infections. According to a study done at the Wilkes University, college students surveyed showed higher levels of IgA in their saliva among those who had frequent sex a week than those who did not.

Sex reduces the risk of prostate cancer in men.

Australian researchers have found that men in their 20’s reduced the risk of getting prostate cancer later in life if they had frequent ejaculations. This effect however reduces as one enters their 30’s to 50’s.

Sex reduces pain.

As oxytocin increases, so do other endorphins or “feel good” hormones which help in the reduction of pain. Couples should know that sex can cure headaches. This means that sexual partners who use the headache excuse to avoid sex are losing out on a good, pleasurable remedy to promote all round health.

Sex improves intimacy.

Oxytocin, once again comes into play, since it is the hormone that makes one “fall in love.” This hormone helps people to bond and feel secure in the presence of another. It is the hormone that is produced in high levels in breastfeeding mothers making them have that deep bond with the child.

Sex reduces chances of heart attacks and strokes.

Having sex twice or more a week reduces the chances of a person getting a heart attack by more than 50 percent. After some research, scientists showed that sex is not related to stroke as most people in their late years tend to think.

The benefits of sex are vast and varied, but they can only be summarized as beneficial to the health and wellness of those who engage in it regularly.
