More is Better: Why The Bearers of Plus Sized Dresses Are Beautiful

Jul29

plus-size…Or why this blog is NOT hear to encourage you actually lose weight. Remember you ARE beautiful!

It is common knowledge that today’s models are fake, at least for the most part. Everyone knows that male models are dehydrated days before shooting ads featuring six-packs, chiselled backs, and huge arms. It is even more common knowledge that female models, for the most part, aren’t exactly healthy. The human body isn’t meant to be that thin. There has been a documented past about female models starving themselves weeks before shoots.

The entire female model industry is plagued with cases of anorexia, and even a percentage of models have a bulimia disorder. In no way am I trashing the modeling industry – models with these strange conditions are decreasing, or at least receiving less press. It’s clear that the mainstream perception of what a gorgeous female model looks like isn’t a healthy one. The next big thing should be a shift to something a little healthier, or at the very least different.

Why is it that thin is perceived as beautiful? Of course there are many, many beautiful thin models. Something that the spotlight fails to cover is that there are just as many, if not more beautiful plus sized models. For some reason there is such a negative vibe given by the mainstream when the topic of plus size models comes up. Is it the plus size dresses? The joyful attitude of the models, rather than the gloomy mood of most of the thin models? I really can’t understand why it is so popular to be so dangerously thin and unhealthy, rather than having a more realistic figure, which is much healthier.

The mainstream is far from having bigger identified as beautiful, but plus sized models have come a long way. From being frowned upon, and not even considered as true models, to being featured in the occasional commercial. Progress is evident. Not too long ago I saw a Dove commercial on TV which featured plus sized models. Guess what? I found that commercial very attractive. The models were naked, but covering themselves, while advertising Dove soap.

Needless to say I went out and bought a few bars of Dove soap to support the unique advertisement. Not only do ads like that sell products by being unique, but they also make people feel good about themselves. Most of the population does not look like a mainstream, thin model, which furthermore makes it odd that most of the world is attracted to the thin image. Dove’s commercial allows everyone to feel much better about their own bodies; it tells them they don’t have to be like the unnaturally skinny models on other soap commercials, and they can be themselves.

I think the next best thing to happen in the modelling industry will be a push of the spotlight over to the unrecognized plus sized models. Plus sized dresses will sell more than the thin dresses available for purchase now, and the marketing campaigns will make everybody happy. It only makes sense to admire the healthier choice, plus sized models are here to stay.
