Is the Lack of Sleep Making You Fat?

Sep16

shutterstock_103062962Everyone says that sleep deprivation is not good for you. Have you ever wondered why? Many people with sleep deprivation have experienced the exhausting run down feeling. Some of my colleagues complain that they sometimes doze off even when they’re supposed to sit straight in the office chair.

I bet you did not know that you can gain weight due to the lack of sleep. It might sound weird, but the source of your weight gain might not be the wrong diet. It is the sleep deprived body that encourages the weight gain. Various medical studies have revealed a clear connection between the amount of sleep and the weight. There are a lot of factors that influence your sleep. How can you transform your bedroom to improve the quality of your sleep?

Forget about the snooze.

In reality you get deprived from REM sleep that burns the most calories. Getting to bed and waking up every day at the same time will help you create the healthy sleep schedule.

Electronic ban.

–           I know it is almost impossible to ban your electronic devices from your bedroom. You are still going to use your iPhone to check your Facebook and chat with your friends. Try imposing an electronic curfew one hour before you go to sleep. You will reduce the negative effects of electronic exposure and let your brain set into the relaxed and sleeping mode. Try reading a book, meditate or do some yoga.

Change your mattress!

shutterstock_88194175–          How old is your sleeping surface? You need to change it every 5-10 years, depending on the quality. Your mattress can be the reason why you don’t get enough sleep. Mattress shopping can be fun. You will be amazed by the variety of choices: memory foam mattress, spring mattress or tempurpedic beds. Go to the nearest mattress store, try all sorts of mattresses, but don’t buy anything right away. You need to sleep on it and then come back to the store and buy it.

A good mattress will provide sufficient support for your body and help you deal with your lower back pains. A bad mattress will not help you with your back issues – it will only make things worse. As a matter of fact you will wake up restless and even exhausted. No wonder why you didn’t feel like having a light yoga session this morning!

In case you suffer from stiff neck, you should replace your pillows. Remember, that the quality of your sleep depends on the quality of your sleeping equipment.

If you follow these simple steps, you will soon start enjoying the high quality sleep. Don’t let your poor sleeping habits prevent you from losing weight. You can easily create and maintain the bedroom environment that will help you sleep better. Remember that your bed should associate with relaxation time and nothing else.
