Skin is something that you can’t ignore and a glowing skin does add to your personality. That is why skincare is such a major business these days with all kinds of creams and lotions available in the market.

Skin is pretty much like the rest of our body. It requires good polyunsaturated fats, the way our heart requires. Addition of essential fatty acids (EFA) in your diet and reduction of bad fat does show on your skin’s health and it looks much better. Essential fatty acids like omega -3 are concentrated with the skin cells and they are major contributors to the overall health and appearance of your skin. Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid that is usually found in various salt water fishes like tuna, salmon and sardines.

Benefits of Omega 3 for skin

The skin produces natural oils to keep itself moisturized. At times skin suffers from lack of these oils due factors like sun exposure, wind etc. However, omega 3 fats are quite similar to skin’s natural oils and intake of omega 3 helps the skin in producing more of these natural oils, which in turns keeps the skin moisturized, soft and supple.

Omega 3 also has anti inflammatory properties. Fish oil rich in omega 3 is known to reduce the inflammation of the skin. As most of the skin conditions are due to inflammation, Omega 3 helps in reducing it and helps in improving the skin health.

Omega 3 works as an effective anti-aging supplement as well. Omega 3 helps in providing skin with natural protection from UV rays and other free radicals. It also helps in reversing the skin damage linked to photo aging. Omega 3 also helps in boosting the collagen production, which helps in increasing the elasticity and firmness of the skin. This helps in reducing the fine lines and wrinkles on the skin.

Omega 3 facilitates better skin health by promotes better blood circulation. It also plays an important part in building the outer structure of the skin cells.

Omega 3 deficiency shows on skin health

Skin is reflection of inner health and if something is wrong inside the body it’s reflected on our skin health as well. If our body runs out of essential fatty acids like omega 3 that maintains health of important body parts, our skin starts to show signs of damage.

Deficiency of EFA and omega 3 could show up in form of dry skin, premature aging, acne, blemishes and eczema.

Sources of Omega 3

Fish is the primary source of Omega 3. However, not everyone eats fish in sufficient quantities to fulfill the requirement of Omega 3 fats. There are many omega 3 fish oil supplements available in the market to help you maintain the proper omega 3 levels in the body. Amongst omega 3 fats, DHA or Docosahexaenoic Acid is most beneficial for the skin and other parts of the body. So it’s advisable to choose Omega 3 fish oil supplement with high DHA component.

So now you know that improving skin health with omega 3 fish oil is possible, it’s important that you incorporate this vital supplement in your diet. Omega 3 fish oil is not just beneficial for your skin, but also for your overall body. Though there are no known interactions of these supplements with other medications, it’s still prudent to consult your physician if you already have any existing medical condition.
