Health Tips While Traveling: What the International Traveler Needs to Know
If you are heading overseas on business or pleasure, there are a few things that you will want to do in order to ensure
that you stay healthy while traveling. There is nothing worse than being in a foreign country and being sick as a dog, especially if you end up in a hospital. Medical supplies aren’t cheap over-seas and a hospital stay could be expensive. If you are on vacation, this could mean thousands and thousands of dollars wasted. If on business it could kill your business deal and hurt your company. Follow these easy steps to help prevent illness and have the best trip possible.
Lots of sleep
Before you travel, make sure that you get lots and lots of sleep. Once you hit foreign soil, odds are you’ll be going constantly and probably won’t be getting enough sleep. If you are well-rested before you head out, your immune system will be working at full force and you will be less likely to be hit with any bugs that may be going around.
Keep your hands clean
Bring anti-bacterial hand soap and hand sanitizer with you. Frequent hand washing has proven to prevent illness. And since you could be dealing with unknown bugs depending on where you’re traveling, having your own supply of anti-bacterial products is the smart thing to do. While anti-bacterial soap does the same thing as hand sanitizer, you may find yourself needing to clean your hands and not have access to water. Or, the water itself could be a source for bacteria, depending on where you are.
Drink lots of water, but be careful with local sources
If you are visiting somewhere hot and tropical, you want to make sure that you stay well hydrated, and that means drinking lots of water. But be careful of where you are getting your water: some countries have sub-par water supplies that could actually make you sick. If you aren’t sure, stick to bottled water.
Carry meds with you
Medical supplies may not be readily available where you are. If you are hit with a headache, stomach ache, nausea or diarrhea you don’t want to have to search high and low for meds. You also don’t want to have to pay an arm and a leg for medical supplies or rely on local remedies. Always carry a small personal supply of meds including something for headaches, an anti-diarrhea medication and anti-nausea pills. But before you bring your supply into a foreign country, check first to see if there are any restrictions when it comes to bringing your own medication.
Travelling overseas can be fun and exciting, so you don’t want to spend your whole trip in your hotel room, sick. Following a few easy steps will help you to stay healthy and happy while travelling.
