Fitness Holidays

Holidays tend to be ideal for breaking the norm. Diets don’t exist on holiday and there is usually no need to exercise either. It is difficult to argue against these points; after all, it is a holiday.

However, what if this doesn’t sound like your ideal holiday?

Most people who work in health and fitness do so because they enjoy it. So why wouldn’t you want time off to enjoy nothing but your hobby? Well it is always a possibility; there are plenty of options for those who wish to have a more active holiday!

The first and easiest solution is, of course, booking into a hotel with a gym. This means that a daily session can be squeezed in at any point. However, the draw back being that there would be little point going to a different country and sitting in a gym which will probably look like home.

So what other options are there?

There are bespoke travel companies that specialise in fitness holidays. Most of these will schedule your days for you. This can be a blessing, as you won’t have any time where you are doing nothing and may become bored. This can help if you are looking for a detox holiday; but not if you are still looking to have some spontaneity in your holiday schedule.

The only solution, if this is the case, is to plan your own getaway. In this instance, it will all be about what you love to do. If you love walking there is a whole world to explore. It will more be about where you wish to see on your travels. For the dedicated, anywhere can be accessible. Places like Machu Pichu can only be accessed via an 18-hour trek, but the reward for all of the trekking will be a fantastic view of the remains of an ancient civilisation. For the more tame explorers, the rural aspects of many countries offer a great backdrop for any walk. There are many rural Spanish villages that offer fantastic cultural aspects that aren’t found in the commercial areas, and are more often than not, better priced.

In conclusion, this type of holiday will not be ideal for everyone, but for those who enjoy a break with plenty of fitness and activity, then this could be the perfect holiday for you. Going for a run can be a great way to explore your new surroundings and also test your body in different conditions. Of course, precautions need to be taken; if you are going running in a different climate then the effects can be quite substantial. Hydration will more often than not be the key to protecting yourself; sun cream will also be a life saver. Try and just test yourself for a short period to gradually get acclimatised. If these steps are followed, then you will be ready for taking your fitness to the next level and to the next country!
